School Exam Timer

An exam countdown built for a high school after the PowerPoint system failed one too many times. Real users, high stakes, no room to be clever.

What it was

A slow, error-prone PowerPoint slide system running exams for a whole school.

What I built

A working timer with multi-timer drift correction, reading time, and colour coding tuned to how invigilators actually read a room.

What changed

In use at the IB school in Kenya it was built for. Before it, exams were run off YouTube countdown videos dropped into a single PowerPoint slide.

What it gave me

Building for the conditions the room is actually in, rather than the conditions the documentation assumes.

What it shows

The first thing I built for people who could not tolerate it breaking. That constraint is still how everything gets built.

What you can check

  • Remembrance logic: a power cut does not lose the exam, the timer resumes where it stopped
  • Anti-drift timing: every room gets the same duration however long the app has been open
  • Packaged as a native Windows desktop app, with a written teacher guide

Tell me what you sell. I'll tell you what I'd build.

First call's free. If it's not something I should be doing, I'll tell you that instead.
